Time to Turn Around
Will someone please explain why an impoverished person goes to jail for stealing $10, but huge corporations which tank the global economy harming millions of people get a taxpayer bail out? Or why a nation’s president who orders the invasion of a sovereign country based on misinformation fed to the public, which wastes billions of taxpayer dollars and kills tens of thousands of people, gets to retire on his ranch, publish his memoirs and conduct speaking engagements?
Or why corporations are allowed to make billions of dollars while spewing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere creating global warming which kills thousands of people from mega storms and will eventually harm billions of people? Or why people must have a test and get an official license to drive a car or an official ID to vote but can buy a military style, automatic weapon on the Internet without a test or license?
Or why a person of the female sex who does the same work as a male worker gets paid less? Or why a representational democracy does not pass laws that are favored by 80% of the population? Or why corporations are allowed to damage the water table through fracking, the air we breathe through industrial pollution and the only land we will ever have through strip mining?
Or why pro life means that a fetus has more right to live than the woman bearing it but if and when it is born it has no rights to healthcare, food or shelter? Or why a white president gets away with saying “if you are not for me, you are for the terrorists” and a black president is called a socialist or a Nazi for trying to get health care for 40 million low income Americans?
Or why a few people can live in a $200 million home and millions of human beings live in shacks or on the street? Or why nations spend trillions of dollars on armaments and war but do not have money for educating their children? Or why there are billions of dollars to create a new electronic gadget but no funds to eradicate global poverty?
Something is very, very wrong with this picture. The system is utterly corrupt and confused. And we have met the system and it is us. It is time to have compassion for ourselves, for our own confusion. It is time for the birth of a new way of thinking, doing and being. May people of good will everywhere wake up, turn around and help catalyze a better world for all people and all life on Earth.
